MWO program

SPSL

The first program is the Semi-Professional Soccer League (SPSL), which is the focus of this document and will be described in further detail below.  The SPSL is the cornerstone of the MWO program, and the other two programs will follow from it.

YADP

For the Young Athlete’s Development Program (YADP), a variety of professionals and MWO coaches will coach and mentor the young women in the areas of sports and academics.

The four coaches of the MWOSPSL will recruit young players from several high schools in the periphery of York University for this program. In the months of June, July and August, the students will be taught to improve their physical capacity and technical soccer skills.  It is expected that the coaches will also provide a level of mentorship to encourage development of life skills for the young people.

The academic program will focus on improving the students’ GPA which will hopefully improve their chances of receiving scholarships to universities in Canada. Simultaneously we will prepare them for the American-based SAT exams. This will create opportunities to win partial and full scholarships to American colleges and universities.

In partnership with the MWO, M.A.T.A. (Mentoring Arts Tutoring Athletics) from York University will lead the academic program.  M.A.T.A. is a student run organization devoted to the educational attainment and professional development of youth in marginalized communities, mainly the Jane and Finch area in Toronto. York mentors are assigned to high school students reaching their goals. The MWO will provide the linkage from M.A.T.A. to the high school students.

IOP

The third program of the MWO is the International Outreach Program

(IOP).  This branch will focus on enhancing international co-operation and improving the social, political and economic status of women in developing nations through personal empowerment.  The main aspect of this branch is to organize an international tournament on Canada Day Weekend with teams from the Caribbean.  The MWO already has linkages with a team from Trinidad that will come to play.
